Milton

MILTON - Joseph F. Nickey III , a lifelong resident of Milton, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2022 at his home surrounded by family.

Joe was born May 2, 1956, the son of the late Joseph Jr. and Nancy (Miller) Nickey.  Joe's death breaks a marital union of 46 years to his wife, Christine (Guffey) Nickey, who survives. Joe and Chris were one-time members of the First Baptist Church in Milton.

Joe was a 1974 graduate of Milton High School and remained a fervent supporter of Milton High School and the Milton community in general.  After school, Joe worked for a time at Glen Gery Brick, but worked most of his life at the Milton Wastewater Treatment Plant until retirement.

Joe's true passion though was baseball and softball, first as a coach and later as an umpire.  He was a coach for the 1984 Milton Little League state championship team, which was the time of his life.  After coaching his attention turned to umpiring, starting with Little League and working his way up to high school and college baseball and softball.  One of his highlights was umpiring the Girls Softball Little League World Series in Portland, Oregon.

Joe's other passion was traveling with his wife and supporting all of his grandchildren. He got involved in Ride for Life to support his grandson, and he could still be found on the baseball diamond or football field, rooting for the kids.

In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by two sisters Peg and Marc Hafer of Scottsdale, Arizona, Sue Gomez of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a daughter Allison Nickey and her partner Jeremy Cleary of Milton, a son Anthony Nickey and his partner Stacy Hommel of Northumberland, grandchildren Hunter and Wyatt Page of Milton, Connor, Taylor, and Chandler Nickey of Northumberland, and Jonathan and Kaydence Hommel of Northumberland, Mother in Law Jennett Guffey of New Columbia, In Laws Tracie and Dennis Keiffer of Milton, Wendy and Harry Eddy of Milton, Terry Guffey of New Columbia, Brad and Tonia Guffey of Mifflinburg, and Barry and Lisa Guffey of Milton. Additionally, Joe is survived by numerous nieces and nephews which he loved dearly.  He was especially involved with his nephew, Joseph David Nickey, who he was so proud of for following his dreams.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his father-in-law Robert Guffey, and his brother Frank E Nickey.
